Sad Without Her Sunshine: A Tiny Tale of CrazySugarFreakBaby!

Iris Paintbrush Sunrise did not know where or why her daddy had gone, but she missed him.

Iris lived up to her namesake every morning, when she woke with the sun. The sunrise was so pretty that she had to share it, so she squealed as loud as she could, to wake up all the big people, so they could appreciate it with her. Most of them did not come to her room, which she concluded was because she had not squealed loudly enough, but her daddy always did. His eyes were asleep, but his smile was always awake for her. Sometimes he would feed her from her bottle, while he fed from his own, and sometimes he would read to her, from books with pretty pictures and colors, and his voice would wake up too, and sometimes, he would just hold her as he sat in the rocking chair, gently rocking her back and forth, as she sucked on her fingers, and sometimes his, basking in the sunshine.

Her daddy held Iris a lot, even when he would take his own naps, and she would lay on her tummy, on top of his chest, feeling it rise and fall, slowly and noisily. Other times, he would clean and change her, or play games with her. Her favorite game was throw and pick up. She would throw her pacifier onto the floor, and he would pick it up, clean it, and give it back to her, so she could throw it again, and she would laugh. His favorite games all involved teasing her or acting silly. He liked to pick her up and set her on top of his head, on her tummy, holding her by her sides so he could still tickle her and make her squeal. He would pretend she was his hat, until she reached her arms down far enough to wave her hands in front of his eyes. Other times, when she sucked on her fingers, he would clean her hands and pretend to eat her fingers too, making hungry growling noises, and she would laugh.

She still had lots of big people to hold her, but none of them knew how to play the games that her daddy did, and so many of them had sad faces, which made her feel sad too. Some of them, like the cranky man, did not even know how to hold her. His hugs were not comfy enough, so Iris let him know by crying. When he tried holding her a different way, it still was not comfy enough, so she let him know by crying louder. Finally, one of the nice ladies came to comfort her, and he had an upset look on his face, but it wasn’t Iris’ fault that he was not smart enough to understand her crying. She concluded that she had not cried loudly enough for him to understand. After all, he was not even smart enough to know how to smile. She tried to help him smile, by pushing her hands onto the sides of his mouth, but she could tell she would have to be patient with him, and do this many more times before he learned how.

The nice ladies were much smarter and more colorful. Her daddy was glowing yellow, like the sun, but many of the nice ladies were green, and one of them glowed too. The glowing green nice lady could make pretty pictures in the air, and the singing green nice lady could make soothing noises to calm Iris, when she became fussy or felt like crying. There was even a little green girl, hardly a big person at all, who was shy and played peek-a-boo with her long, dark hair. She tried to hide her face, but Iris could not understand why, since she was still pretty. The little green boy with her was even better at playing peek-a-boo, since he could hide all of himself, and not just his face.

None of them were her daddy, though, and Iris started crying just to make him come, since he had always come when she had cried before. But instead of her daddy, it was her mommies or her grandma who came when she cried now, and Iris felt even sadder as soon as she saw them, because their faces looked like her crying made them feel like crying too.

Iris did not know where or why her daddy had gone, but she missed him. She could tell she would have to be patient with him too, though, so she waited, but every morning, she squealed as loud as she could, hoping her daddy would finally be back, so they could wake up with the sun together again.
